Celebrating the remarkable journey and enduring contributions of Professor Anthony O. Uwaifo — scholar, mentor, and pioneer of Nigerian biochemistry.
Professor A.O. Uwaifo (Ph.D) was Professor Emeritus at the Department of Biochemistry, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan. He served as academic faculty there from 1971 — when he obtained his Ph.D — until his retirement in 2008, spanning a remarkable 37 years of dedicated service to Nigerian science.
He was the first Nigerian to be elected both as a corresponding member of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and member of the Environmental Mutagen Society (EMS). He was also a fellow of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).
In 1990, he received the prestigious Eleanor Roosevelt Fellowship — a highly competitive global prize awarded annually to only ten distinguished researchers. He was the second Nigerian and ninth African ever honoured since its inception in 1961, and one of seven non-US resident scientists to have received the Holland Prize.
He served the Federal Government of Nigeria's panel for the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), and was a fellow in the Heidelberger laboratory at the University of California, Los Angeles. He served as Head of Biochemistry twice (1989–1991 and 1999–2002).
He retired as Professor Emeritus on 30 September 2008, yet continued his active involvement in education and research until his passing on 31 December 2020.
Apply for the ScholarshipThis prize and scholarship fund honours his memory and promotes ongoing excellence at the undergraduate level in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology — with particular emphasis on Cancer Research, his area of greatest expertise and passion.
